MiniMax M3.1 Flash: test the cost of completed work

A low-cost model becomes useful when it completes repeatable work without expensive repairs. MiniMax M3.1 Flash is a candidate worth evaluating alongside your current worker model.

Marek Bartoš highlighted the topic. The primary reference is MiniMax’s announcement dated 19 October 2026: access through its API, M Plan and MiniMax Code, with weights still planned for later release. Earlier preview availability should not be confused with this announcement.

Start with the API rate

The vendor lists these rates per million tokens:

Item USD
Input 0.15
Output 0.60
Cache reads 0.015

These are the vendor’s announced API rates, not subscription pricing or a guarantee of another platform’s bill. Supplier performance claims are not our measurements.

An illustrative calculation: a request with 10,000 input tokens and 1,000 output tokens, without caching, costs $0.0021 in inference at those rates. A thousand identical requests cost $2.10. This excludes tools, extra turns, infrastructure and human work. An agent usually needs several requests to finish a task.

Three repair attempts followed by an operator taking over can easily erase the value of a low token price.

Three useful evaluations

Choose work for which you already have a reference result.

  • Support: propose routing and draft replies for closed tickets. Measure routing accuracy, missing facts and review time.
  • CRM enrichment: fill a small set of fields from supplied evidence. Attach a source to every claim and leave unsupported fields empty.
  • Coding: reproduce and fix small historical bugs in an isolated repository copy. Require an appropriate test and review before accepting the change.

These are proposed evaluations, not benchmarks performed for this article. Keep the current specialist and human approval for complex architecture or costly decisions until the evidence supports a change.

Connecting it to n8n or Make

Separate inference from writes to the destination system. Prepare a minimized input, let the model propose an answer, and validate required fields and allowed values in code. Only accepted output moves forward.

Malformed output, timeouts and uncertainty need explicit branches. Limit retries and keep the same case ID across attempts. A retry must not create another CRM contact.

Before changing an integration, verify the exact model identifier, endpoint, authentication and supported features with your provider. A shared marketing name does not establish identical API behavior. This article does not offer an untested universal configuration snippet.

What the decision report should contain

Alongside cost and latency, record accepted results, repairs and escalations. Break failures down by task type. A Czech message full of typos is a different test from a clean English example.

Start in shadow mode: the candidate sees the same cases but cannot change customer records. After comparing accepted outcomes, route a limited portion of routine work to it and preserve a rollback path.

The reason to test M3.1 Flash is the economics of repeated work. Confirm savings with cost per accepted case, including review—not token prices alone.
