Sigma Agents: governed business data for AI workflows

Analyst reviewing invoice data and a business dashboard

Business agents often hit a familiar obstacle: they can write a summary, but do not know which numbers are authoritative or who may see them. Sigma Agents are most interesting for companies that already organize their data and permissions in Sigma and a warehouse. I would not introduce the entire platform into a small team just to automate one spreadsheet.

Sigma announced general availability on September 29, 2026, including external invocation through MCP and REST API. We found this in our supplementary primary-source review and are publishing on September 30. It is not a new language model.

Reuse the task definition

The documentation ties an agent to a workbook, its instructions, data and available tools. Usage consumes credits. Model judgment selects an action; a predefined tool implements that action.

For a CTO, the opportunity is to keep a business task's definition in one place. A salesperson might start in an AI chat and an internal pipeline over HTTP, without independently redefining an open order each time. I would still version those instructions and trial changes on a copy of the process.

A pilot for invoice and order discrepancies

Here is how I would design the pilot. This is a proposal, not an integration we have tested.

  1. Pick one department and a bounded set of historical documents. Identify the authoritative sources for orders, invoices and delivery status.
  2. Validate totals, currencies and duplicates in deterministic code. Ask the agent to explain discrepancies and propose next steps, rather than guess accounting facts.
  3. Store the document ID, supporting records, exception reason and proposed resolution in a review queue. Reviewers must be able to open the original records.
  4. Pass approved results to an existing n8n or Make workflow. Recheck current state before writing and use a unique operation identifier so a retry cannot create a duplicate.

During implementation, take request schemas, authentication and response handling from current API documentation. REST access does not establish that every existing n8n node supports every agent feature.

Test permissions with two identities

Sigma says agent calls retain data permissions. I would verify that with an ordinary user and a more privileged account issuing the same query. Include another department's records, a missing document and an aggregate that might reveal restricted information.

Evaluate read permissions separately from external actions. This pilot needs neither payment approval tools nor bulk CRM writes. It needs a reliable path to “missing evidence.”

Measure a resolved exception

Sigma documents evaluation suites, including checks on tool use and answer correctness. Use those as a starting point and define acceptance criteria around your own process.

I would measure correctly explained exceptions, false alerts, reviewer minutes and cost per approved case. Include warehouse queries, retries and integration operations alongside AI consumption. General availability means neither free operation nor a ready-to-use company data model.

The strongest fit is a company that already trusts its data definitions and wants to turn analysis into a controlled action. Without that foundation, the agent merely moves ambiguity between systems faster.
